Dog Laser Therapy at Whittington Veterinary Clinic

laser therapy for dogsLaser therapy is a safe, non-invasive treatment used to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and accelerate healing in dogs. It is especially beneficial for chronic conditions or post-surgical recovery—and can even reduce the need for long-term medications.

How Does Laser Therapy Work?

Laser therapy uses focused light to stimulate cell activity in areas of pain or injury. This boosts the body’s natural healing process at the cellular level —helping tissue repair faster, with less discomfort.

Why Consider Laser Therapy?

Laser therapy is a great option for dogs with chronic pain, such as arthritis or hip dysplasia, especially when long-term medications may impact kidney or liver health. It’s gentle, effective, and can enhance your dog’s comfort and mobility while reducing the need for additional medication.

What Kind of Laser Do We Use?

We use a low-level, frequency-specific laser, which stimulates healing without cutting or burning tissue. It targets damaged cells—like those in ligaments, joints, or muscles—and encourages them to function more efficiently. This is different from high-powered lasers that only reduce inflammation; our laser supports true tissue repair.

What Conditions Can Laser Therapy Help Treat in Dogs?

Laser therapy is incredibly versatile and can be used to treat a wide range of conditions—often helping to reduce or eliminate the need for long-term medications. It works by reducing inflammation, easing pain, and promoting faster tissue repair.

Common conditions we treat with laser therapy include:

  • ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injuries – Helps reduce pain and inflammation in torn knee ligaments
  • Arthritis and joint pain – Eases discomfort and improves mobility
  • Bladder infections and chronic cystitis – Reduces inflammation in the urinary tract
  • Skin conditions and allergies – Supports healing of inflamed or irritated skin
  • Disc disease and back pain – Helps manage pain in dogs with spinal issues or slipped discs
  • Neck pain – Especially helpful for short-nosed (brachycephalic) breeds like Pugs and French Bulldogs
  • Chronic ear inflammation – Eases discomfort and promotes healing in persistent ear issues
  • Fractures and acute injuries – Supports recovery and reduces pain in soft tissue or bone injuries
  • Post-surgical pain – Offers comfort after procedures
  • Incision healing – Promotes faster healing after spays, neuters, or other surgeries

Laser therapy is painless, well-tolerated by most dogs, and can make a noticeable difference in their recovery and comfort.

How long does a session last?

Most laser therapy appointments take 15–20 minutes, depending on the condition being treated. We typically use 3–4 frequency settings per session, each lasting about 3 minutes.

Are there any risks?

Laser therapy is generally safe and effective when performed correctly using proper settings and treatment durations that our staff is trained to do. With sensitivity to light, it is necessary to wear protective eye goggles and your pet wear "doggles". We advise to NOT look directly at the light beam. Areas of suspected cancer, neoplasia, and thyroid glands should be avoided. We take every precaution to minimize any risks.

How will I know if it’s working?

Most pet parents see signs that their dog is feeling better, such as:

  • Easier movement and mobility
  • More interest in play
  • Better mood and energy
