Here’s What to Do Next

At Whittington Veterinary Clinic, we know how heartbreaking it can be to lose a pet—or how urgent it feels to help when you find one. Whether you're missing a furry family member or trying to reunite a lost pet with its home, we're here to guide you.

If You’ve Lost Your Pet

  1. Start Close to Home

Walk your neighborhood, call their name, and check your yard or usual hiding spots. Bring treats or toys they love.

  2. Visit the Vermilion Parish Rabies Animal Control

Address: 11303 Pioneer Rd, Kaplan, LA 70548
    Phone: (337) 643-3160
Strays are often picked up and brought to our local shelter. Visit or call the shelter regularly, as pets may be held for a short period.

  3. Make and Post Flyers

Include a clear photo, your pet’s name, description, and your contact info. Post around your neighborhood, vet offices, local businesses, and parks.

  4. Share on Social Media

Post on community Facebook pages and lost/found pet groups. Include a photo, location lost, and contact info. The more eyes, the better!

  5. Let Us Know

Call our clinic—we’ll note it and keep an eye out in case someone brings your pet in.

If You’ve Found a Pet

If the pet is wearing a tag, call the number or visit the address listed.

  1. Check for ID

If the pet is wearing a tag, call the number or visit the address listed.

  2. Bring Them to a Vet or Shelter

Most clinics (including ours) can scan for a microchip and help locate the owner.

  3. Contact the Vermilion Parish Rabies Animal Control at (337) 643-3160

They may have reports of a missing pet matching the one you’ve found. They can also legally house strays while searching for owners.

  4. Post Online and in Your Neighborhood

Take a photo and share on Facebook groups, lost/found pet sites, and post flyers locally.

  5. Keep Them Safe

If you’re able, hold onto the pet temporarily in a secure area while searching for the owner—but avoid putting yourself or the animal at risk.
